Quicksand (Part 5) introduces a shift in momentum — after the density of Part 4, Henry Hu opens the composition slightly, allowing light to enter through lighter passages that interrupt the heavier grounds. This creates a dialogue between weight and release that gives the piece its particular energy. Forms remain ambiguous, neither fully geometric nor purely gestural, occupying a middle territory that Hu has made distinctly his own across the series. The mark-making feels more varied here, ranging from broad washes to precise, considered strokes.
